Friday morning I arrived at Radnor Lake in Nashville by 6:30 am. Since we are still on daylight savings time and the skies were overcast, it was yet quite dark. Getting out of my car at the west parking lot I heard an EASTEN SCREECH calling from the woods to the right of the visitors center. Later I also got my first HERMIT THRUSH of the season. I reached the dam area by 7:00 am and for the next 90 minutes watched the action around the dam spillway. Although there was intermittant light rain, I nevertheless once again enjoyed the early morning warbler activities. Total numbers and species are much reduced from last week, but I had absolutely no warbler-neck. It is a real pleasure to be able to look down into the spillway and view with great clarity the colorful striped backs of BAY-BREASTED and BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERs. Yes, warblers really do have backs not just underbellies! Besides the 5 species of warblers, there were also 2 WINTER WRENs that at times chased each other through the vines and briers near the dam. There were also at least 40 CHIMNEY SWIFTs fluttering about. GOLDEN-CROWNED and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETs rounded out the morning's viewing.
