You should read how the Muslims getting away with almost anything they like and the judges and cops are letting them so as not to seem racist. Technology isn't helping the Europeans and their economy is own a downslope because of the cost of entitlements (an enormous amount of which goes to Muslims on welfare). Also, you should read how managed the press is in Europe. Bawer would compare what he was reading in European papers (in regard to various major events) to what he was getting on the internet from the U.S. and was amazed. Europeans are being taught the U.S. is the great Satan - no irony was intended, just disgust. This was one of the elements where I parted company with Fukuyama. He was impressed that nations in the Middle East (with managed presses) and Europe (with managed presses) didn't like us. Bawer thought Britain had the freest press in Europe, but nations like the Netherlands and Sweden in thinking they had Free Presses had presses that ranged from Far Left to Near Left. And this is what makes some writers despair. Europe needs to have immigration policies more like ours but they aren't being permitted to see us clearly; which makes it even more likely that they will eventually go Fascist berserk when they finally get fed up. It is not in our best interest to see that happen to Europe, but I don't know what we can do about it. Perhaps Berlinski will. This is like saying the Mexican farm workers are going to seize control of the USA. > American is "The Great Satan" to almost as many Europeans as Muslims. Tony Judt pointed this out in the NYRB. In a short sentence, he said the USSR lost the Cold War, but the USA didn't win it either. The USA came out of the Cold War, expecting to get recognition for saving everyone from the USSR. But that didn't happen. The USA is probably more despised and feared now than ever in its history. This is due to US policies during the Cold War (destroying democracies and installing brutal dictatorships in South America, South East Asia, South Korea, Iran, the Middle East). And then there's the USA after the Cold War: starting illegal wars, threatening more wars in Syria, Iran, North Korea, and generally acting arrogant towards everyone else. So Judt is right: the USA didn't win the Cold War, not in the sense the Allies won WWII. Lawrence sees this when he writes that the USA is the Great Satan to almost everyone. What an irony, no? yrs, andreas www.andreas.com ------------------------------------------------------------------ To change your Lit-Ideas settings (subscribe/unsub, vacation on/off, digest on/off), visit www.andreas.com/faq-lit-ideas.html
