I have the version designed for the iPhone. You barely know that they are there. I use them and really like them because they are very comfortable and don't restrict the ambient sound. They lay on the little piece of cartilage in the front of the ear. I have replaced a mini speaker that I used for years with them. They are self powered so don't require any charging or batteries. I had an external speaker which I tried, but it didn't work well, probably because it is old, but like you, I don't want ear phones when I am on the busy streets. Have a couple more things to try and will check an electronics store for suggestions, but that is my major problem with any of these. I have to hear them or they are useless. For a time I tried using WayFinder on my phone in a large mitten but it is really hard to hear. I didn't have a bluetooth headset but I don't much like head sets when I am out traveling in the snow, sounds already being muted. Reading a couple of lines of braille at intervals when you want to be alerted to an intersection just doesn't cut it. Now that I am retired I can just choose to stay home under blizzard or cold conditions but then neither do I have need for GPS in my living room.----- Original Message ----- From: "Howard Kaufman" <wa9top@xxxxxxxxx>To: <gps-talkusers@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, December 04, 2010 9:52 AM Subject: [gps-talkusers] Re: trekker experiencesI tested my old PK at minus 10 F, it worked fine. I could pull off a glove, read a line and put the bglove on. I had time for maybe twolinesif I was quick. It would have been hard to have a braille only optionatthose temperatures, but the Braillenote and the GPS worked as well asthepolar fleice arctic hood, down filled coat and mittens, snow pants, andsnow boots rated to minus 50 DG F. I had long hunters underware jeans and a sweatshirt under the coldweatherstuff. It all worked except I shatered a roller ball cane tip, justbyhitting an ice block. So my advice, is for solid cane tips at those temperatures.
