I'd like to see some input from Shawn 
Barrick as well.  He's the historian 
here! :)

Personally, I think starting out with a 
handful of deities for each alignment 
is a great way to start.  Most world 
systems began with one or only a few 
deities - they didn't have a full 
complement overnight.

Again, we all need to decide this 
stuff, but if you look at the Norse or 
Egyptian pantheons (outside the realm 
of comics), they're really rather small.

For evil gods, the Norse really only 
had Loki and Hel; the Greeks had Hades 
(and he wasn't even really that evil).  
The Egyptians had Set and Sebek - see 
where I'm going with this?
