Members and Friends of Austin Mennonite Church

I pray you are finding inspiration as you continue your journey of faith.

When Moses ascended the mountain to obtain the commandments which God had
revealed, a new course in the history of the Hebrew people was begun. How
did the publication of these ten directives change the lives of these
people? Because their previous existence had been a fragmented interaction
between 12 clans sharing a common crisis of oppression, their new freedom on
the open range became a widening door of opportunity for self-determination.
No doubt their sense of 'conscience' gave them some guidance. Yet
conscience alone was not sufficient to regulate their relations. And, the
dynamic between 'conscience' and 'commandment' was a progressively unfolding
experience for them. Years later, when Jesus ascended a similar mountain,
this dynamic reflects full maturity. There is a lesson for us in the vision
witnessed by the few disciples who accompanied Jesus on this occasion. My
attempt to find this lesson will be related in the sermon this next Sunday
morning, "What was God thinking?"

May it go well with you. Sincerely,

Garland Robertson

...always hold firmly to the thought that each one of us can do something to
bring some portion of misery to an end
