Derek - I can read Braille but hardly ever do; I haven't read a Braille book for decades now, I find them too bulky and uncomfortable to read. There are added factors to this also, I can't say for sure, but I imagine that people blind from birth are more comfortable with Braille than those of us that had some sight and then lost it; I know this won't be the case for everybody, but I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking myself to be a visual person that can't see. There has to be a relationship between the individual, and the medium used, that feels comfortable[in the same way, my headphones have to be comfortable] and for me, this doesn't work with Braille, partly to do with the posture required when reading, partly to do with the translation speed between what the fingers feel and how the brain unscrambles it! I have a good sense of touch generally, I can work with fiddly things etc, so it's not about touch itself! I am aware that some Braille readers can read very fast, but I'm not one of them, and I tire easily from the effort required; this is partly because like I say, I am still to some degree a visual person; when I think of a word, a lot of the time I see it as a printed word rather than a Braille word, but sometimes when I visualise a word, it can be part print part Braille; this is partly an NLP [neurolinguistic programming] thing, and sighted people have it too, where some receive information better visually, others orally, others require practical demonstration etc. So you see, as much as society is trying to make us all the same so that it feels comfortable with itself, inwardly, we are all different - Anyway, I think we're off topic here, so sorry for that - Andy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Derek Hornby" <derek.hornby_uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2008 9:41 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: when is the new Braille coming out as I have had some information | Iain says | | "McKerral is blind and a Braille reader as also is Jim McCafferty." | | Yes but how many on BAUK read Braille alot. | | For example, why do so many blind people choose a disk copy of an RNIB | magazine, rather than a Braille copy? | Why choose talking books, rather than braille books? | | | Note I am of course aware many people not able to read Braille. | I am talking about those that can read braille, but choose not to. | lazy or what? | | Regards, Derek | | ** To leave the list, click on the immediately-following link:- | ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=unsubscribe] | ** If this link doesn't work then send a message to: | ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx | ** and in the Subject line type | ** unsubscribe | ** For other list commands such as vacation mode, click on the | ** immediately-following link:- | ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=faq] | ** or send a message, to | ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the Subject:- faq | ** To leave the list, click on the immediately-following link:- ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=unsubscribe] ** If this link doesn't work then send a message to: ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ** and in the Subject line type ** unsubscribe ** For other list commands such as vacation mode, click on the ** immediately-following link:- ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=faq] ** or send a message, to ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the Subject:- faq
