Thanks for the link Steph. Excellent defects database. Clear pictures and
useful  information. 

As you say NPL is beginning to compile the database, it will be worth
visiting it from time to see how it grows.

NPL is beginning to compile some findings at:

If you enter "tin whisker" into the free text search, you can see some
nice pictures of tin whiskers.

"These are tin whiskers on an I.C. that failed in the field
approximately 6 weeks after it was put in the field. The I.C. was a
RoHS-compliant component with 99% matte tin finished component leads,
and SAC305 alloy paste was used to solder the components to the assembly
in a convection reflow process."
