[texbirds] Tuesday morning bird census, Hagerman NWR.

Today's specie count was 81, down 9 species from last week.  One of the reasons 
was a lack of shorebirds because of a lack of mud flats.  White geese were 
extremely abundant with a conservative estimate of over 7000.  Duck numbers 
were fair with 11 species noted.  The female Bald Eagle afforded our group and 
others closeup looks.  The Bald Eagles have become quite the attraction at the 
refuge.  Enjoy while you can because I suspect they will be incubating eggs 
very soon.  Then they will be less visible. American Kestrels are abundant with 
a total of 10 for the day. Before we left headquarters, in the morning, 
there was a Red-headed Woodpecker in one of the Oaks in front of headquarters 
very busy with the acorns.  We all got great closeup looks. We found 10 species 
of winter sparrows. Area ponds adjoining the refuge are good places to see 
Redheads and Scaups. Look at the cormorants closely because there are Neotropic 
Cormorants as well as Double-crested Cormorants.  Also look at the meadowlarks 
closely because they are mixed flocks this time of year with both Eastern and 
Western Meadowlarks.  Best way to make a positive ID is to hear them sing.
