Well, actually the differences become apparent when you're trying to
"blow up" the picture to 8x10 or larger. At that point you can see the
aliasing the photo software does to make the pixels look less digital
and more film like. If you're taking pictures of the Grand Canyon or
anything you'd like to blow up to a decent size to hang on your wall,
then the greater the number of pixels the better the picture quality.
But if you're just taking shots of your wife standing on the beach at
Cape Cod or basic candid shots of friends and family, well... 2.1 Mpix
might be enough resolution for you.
Also, with digital systems having the sample rates sitting at the
standard 44.1 kHz doesn't do justice to any of the sounds that fall
above the 15 kHz range. Your sampled wave gets closer and closer to a
pure square wave the higher the frequency gets, and on playback the
digital dithering has to do too much averaging and smoothing to make the
sound faithful to the original recorded signal. There are much higher
sample rates available in recording studios now (96 kHz) but since the
CD standard is 44.1 we still end up with a mashed version of the music.=20

(guitar/engineer for Boston) and his attitudes about it. He is scathing
in his criticism of digital media.

I have a 2.1 mega pixel I can not tell the difference between there
pictures and the 35mm prints, but I have a PhotoSmart printer also I
think alot of the hype is like sound systems that have a freq to 40,000
cycles but humans can only hear 20,000 The human eye probably can't
see
much difference between 2.1 and 3 or higher megapixel, but without the
right printer it won't help either.
