There are many choices to choose for under $500. Most digital cameras use
CompactFlash cards however Memory Sticks are starting to become popular. A
64Meg CompactFlash rated at 4X is about $60 and can store upwards of 600
high resolution pictures. Data transfer rate of 1X equals 150 kilobytes (KB)
per second. The higher the speed rating, the faster your camera will be able
to write images to the memory card. More megapixels = better image. Most
cameras use USB to transfer data from the camera to the computer. I have an
older Kodak camera that uses IR. Here's a great link on digital camera

Wifey is wanting a digital camera.
So many choices and options. Some have movie modes with and without
sound.This is not a necessity as we have a VHS-C camcorder.(movies on
these digitals are not the best anyway)
She wants to make and print out photos mostly of family and pets for
keepsake albums for the rest of the family. She has two nice HP
printers, photo quality.
The PC is 1.8 GHz P4, 256 Megs, (with CDRW),etc and several USB ports.
I don't want to go 500-600 bucks.Memory and pixels seems to be the thing
here especially doing better quality photos for prints.Some use
proprietary memory,I think.Some are more costly than others.
Dock stations,or not...
Macro for close ups?
Number of pictures per session...
I'm lost.
I need your considered opinions.Will print them and present them to the
"boss".
