I'm sorry, what, what on earth are you talking about, long term issues with Geo not being resolved. this is a Talks list, so I won't ramble on, anyone not wishing to know the below, which is purely about Geo, please delete now. Mobile Geo a phone and Mobile Speak yes will set you bak a thousand pounds or so, and your Trekker Breeze set you back 600 give or take. your claim is that the Windows solution with Geo has issues and uncertainty about it, CF are working on a new version to update Geo, this is due out this year, so that's commitment for you, Geo works on a phone, so if you choose to, its one less device to carry about. The Trekker is an obviously blind built device with its lovely high contrast colour schemes and bigger buttons for fat fingered blind people. Trekker likewise has no commitment necessarily to update, I'm not saying Humanware won't do it, but you cannot have your cake and eat it, CF are as committed to Geo as Humanware are to Trekker. the additional expense you go through buying the Geo solution gets you the following perks. a Mobile Speak license which can be moved from device to device free of charge into the future, whether or not you keep a Geo product in use or not. the phone is a usable phone, thus negating the need to carry about your Trekker with its lovely colours and bigger buttons. The phone can be charged from any USB socket, the breeze at last review needed its specific power cord. neither companies have said they will or will not continue upgrades beyond 2011. you seem to imply that you have bought into something with a Breeze that will last longer than Geo, how so? the Breeze is just as likely not to be updated, the Geo product is not reliant on CF updating it etc, so in theory you can go on using your Trekker or your Geo product until the end of the earth, or until the maps are so out of date that you give up. so at this time the extra £400 is for a phone, which oh yeah, its a phone, something you can use for more than one purpose, something which has an internet connect, something which doesn't have I'm blind written on the side of it, something which has retail value later if you wish to sell it, you doubtfully will be able to eBay your Trekker. Mobile Speak goes with you forever, so for me, if I've chosen to spend that kind of money, I'd be seriously looking at the Geo option. for anyone wanting more info, as this really isn't the place for it, please do contact me off list, or go direct to TalkNav's phone lines... service@xxxxxxxxxxx or 0844 999 4199 its just a view of mine, but I think you painted an unfair picture. Still, it's a bit of a quandary to be honest as I really don't know where to go at the moment. The old nokia style of phone is dying it seems. Screen reader accessibility is becoming more haphazard, thus for example when it came to a gps solution, that's 1 reason why I went for the breez over geo, I didn't want to be lumbered with something that I could only use for a couple years if the accessibility issues of windows weren't ever resolved. It's not like a phone that you're going to use regularly is going to last more than a couple of years without it being damaged in some way. So what then? With apple accessibility is built in so that does look to be the way to go but it's a question of whether I'd like the touch screen over the keypad. Another plus with the I phone is that you don't have to buy the phone then buy a screen reader on top of it. The price is all in 1. to be honest it's as much about accessibility over afordability and this is where at the very least the windows based solutions really do fall down. Talks isn't so expensive even with the outlay of a phone and screen reader. But with windows you're talking a good 600 quid plus for a reasonable high end windows phone with mobilespeak and assuming you want geo on top of that well then you're talking a grand plus. That for me is a no no because as we know the accessibility issues haven't been addressed. At least not to the satisfactory of the end user to give them confidence in a long term investment of that amount of money. -----Original Message----- From: talks-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:talks-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Graham Page Sent: 31 May 2011 09:10 To: talks-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [talks-uk] Re: buying a new phone The security thing was never that big an issue anyway though for some such as famous people or celebrities where people might care where they had gone it could have been serious. It's resolved with the latest release of IOS however. Windows for the moment seems a no go option unless they sort out the accessibility issues, code factory has made an android screen reader, what about talks devices and of course there's the I phone devices. But even then with the I phone there's an issue or 2 there especially the recent one where it comes to security. So really at this time I really am not sure where to go on this. -----Original Message----- From: talks-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:talks-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Graham Page Sent: 31 May 2011 08:14 To: talks-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [talks-uk] Re: buying a new phone Hi Neil. I agree with what you say entirely, though if you go for an IPod you will not of course be able to access much while you are out and about. In the UK at least, wifi connectivity is patchy to say the least! Bringing things back more on topic, My big question is what non-touch screen devices are still available for use with TALKS? Is it really worth anyone investing in Talks at the moment if new devices are likely to dry up in the next few months. There are of course low end devices from companies like Nokia that do as much as most people would want to do but they cannot run TALKS. The truth is that manufacturers are bullying society into believing that touch screen is always better since touch screen devices are much cheaper to make. The iPhone is a very good consumption product, that is to say, if you are accessing info from it then it is excellent. however, if your objective is to input into it, then it starts undoing at the scenes. let me explain some more, the iPhone is very well adapted for our needs when you consider accessing apps, reading web pages, reading e-mail, reading text messages, checking the weather or listening to music / pod casts. where it falls down is the reverse of this, i.e. you inputting data back into it, in these instances it is slow, cumber sum and irritating. this is not an exclusive issue to iPhone, but in fact almost any touch only device. so notably though since we're on the Apple cart, so to speak, iPad and iPod Touch etc. My advice would be this, consider your phone call and SMS text messaging one issue, and your other mobile needs another. a touch only device is never going to be that great as a device for making and receiving calls and typing out SMS messages... its just not, and yes, sure some folk will say that you can cart about blue tooth keyboards etc, but its just adding complexity and weight to a solution, when something perfectly good without those issues already exists. Now for your music playing, podcast listening, possibly internet surfing, depending on what you do online, i.e. surfing to read, or inputting to, and app usage, these are things that the iOS Apple devices do well. My personal recommendation would be an iPod Touch, basically an iPhone without the phone, you can install Skype etc onto it, making it into a phone should you wish to, but principally it is cheaper, no rental and will give you all the advantages of this type of device... but will not compromise your phone call / texting ability. I hope that this helps in some way. I either want something like an E71, whith it's very wel defined keyborad or, I may be brave and go for an Apple Iphone. regarding the latter, I was told by someone on Saturday night that I could get one of these from a Vodafone store but is this the case as I wouldn't have thought so. I am on a contract and may visit the store tomorrow afternoon. I did have a go with an Iphone on saturday night, although I feel I could do with more time to play with one, before deciding whether or not to buy one. Any thoughts and suggestions on the above would be most welcome. Regards paul.
