RR Thanks for confirming my understanding of a tax dodge? But isn't that a violation of the Jones act? Stanley In a message dated 9/22/2014 9:56:37 P.M. Being a foreign corporation I don't think NOL pays any taxes to the U.S.. Same as when Maesk bought Sealand. November 1999: Mærsk buys container shipper _Sea-Land Corporation_ (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maersk_Line_Limited) with 70 vessels, container terminals and liner service from the _CSX Corporation_ (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSX_Corporation) . The new name of the shipping company is Mærsk Sealand. -RR -----Original Message----- From: "Lee, NI7I" Sent: Sep 22, 2014 6:55 PM To: sparkscoffee@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [sparkscoffee] Re: Fwd: [Radio Officers, &c] US Registry I'm probably missing something here, but what does this have to do with APL except for your comment about NOL? I'm not sure what you mean by tax dodge. NOL mannages all the foreign flagged APL ships. There are many Matson ships that hit American ports and then go foreign and they are foreign flagged. I suspect the Singapore holding company (Neptune I believe?) is a tax dodge? It appeared to the be the APL Merlion of American President Lines. To my surprise the vessel was registered in Singapore! I always had the idea that American shipping companies operated their vessels under USA flag with American crews as this was required by law. Am I wrong or was this something from the past? Perhaps one of our American friends can enlighten me on this. I sailed on containerships myself ( > 50.000 BRT) but they are dwarfed by this real huge baby This is the above mentioned vessel (picture found on the internet) 73 Hans PA3ERE -- -- THIS IS THE "RADIO OFFICERS, &C" MAIL LIST - UNSUBSCRIBE AND OTHER SETTINGS ARE BELOW.
