When I started judging in the mid seventies, it was expected that a judge at
a major specialty was to publish a critique in the review. Usually you
critiqued first through fourth in your winners class which in those days was
open. The critique was not to tell the public "how much you loved the
winner, they asked for the win, I would take him/her home, etc. I could
continue ad nauseum...... These critiques were why we placed each animal
and why we did not place them higher. We mentioned the areas that needed
improvement and if there were faults that entered into the placements, they
were also mentioned. Because of the large entries, severely faulted dogs
did not place so were not critiqued. The general public did not like their
"dirty laundry" exposed and some judges made asses of themselves by their
comments so it eventually died out. If you have a dog with a missing
premolar two, do you want it advertised to the world that they have that
fault? If you have a dog who is sloppy going away, do you want that
advertised to the world? I think that explaining placements at ring side
helps people to follow your judging. It lets them know what are your
priorities and dislikes. I have a problem with written critiques that do
not truly give an educational critique. So I am for ringside explanations
as to your placings in each class and against written critiques as they are
done presently. D.D. (Old School)
