Hi Bill and Barbara,

Actually, I love the idea of an oral critique. As a gaited horse show judge,
I haven't any problem walking up to the microphone and giving reasons for
placing a class. When I take over the responsibilites of the IJA Director of
Horse Show Judges, one of my main implementations is going to require all IJA
Judges to give at least 2 oral critiques at the show. Many times, Judges can
place because of a handler/trainer, sometimes judges place because they spread
the wealth out. If anything, I want to keep the IJA panel "honest". Giving
reasons for placing a class--should they be valid-- seperates the wheat from
the chaffe. I really feel strongly about this as if a person is charged for
handing out the wins and ribbons, they should be further charged in to their
reasonings " I like the other one" or " Just cause" doesn't cut it. I want to
hear (1) what the judge took into consideration (2) how close he or she judged
to the breed standard (3) explain form and function and able
to pick it out and (4) recognize and reward proper breed type. Very few judges
can do this.

Of course, you cannot say, "I placed this dog last because he Sucked"... No,
you will get a letter to AKC or (IJA) before the shows over, but I have found
it handy to use comparison such as, "Dog b, placed seconded as he moved well on
his front and rear and extended and suspended beatifully with front reach and
rear drive, standing he presents a beautiful outline and oozes breed type,
while Dog C didnt have as much reach and drive and, for obvious reasons,
rounded out the class"...

Its not a matter of what you say, but your positioning. As a person with a
horse background and judging livestock, it makes you a much better judge and
keeps you on track for your reasonings.. then sometimes, when judges say stupid
things, you really have to ask yourself, Did i really need to get into this
guy's head?

  Mike
