One of the BIGGEST problems we face in Massachusetts is the idiot notion that it is okay to take your animal to a public place and take him off lead. On Cape Cod, we have gorgeous cranberry bogs with lovely trails to walk. People see this as an alternative to fencing their yard and take their family pets there to let them off lead and run, making it VERY uncomfortable for elderly people who might be afraid or others who would like to walk their dogs ON LEAD. We have filed complaints repeatedly with animal control as well as the local Wildlife commission as there are many ducks, geese and other waterfowl that these marauders are harrassing. Just TRY and tell one of them to leash their dog! Even if the dogs are FRIENDLY, I do NOT appreciate them accosting me or my GSD who IS on lead for his own safety. It is the behavior of these people that has caused several areas to ban dogs PERIOD...even on lead. We have been charged many times by barking, growling dogs only to have the owner yell, "Oh, Muffy is friendly"....yeah. Right. How do they know that MY dog is?? We actually had a person THREATEN my husband while he was walking Arwen on lead in the bog one Sunday morning. They were very fortunate that she remained calm while their dog rushed up at her, barking. My husband had the "audacity" to ask the woman to put her dog on a leash. She was incensed even though the signs clearly state to "Leash Your Dog". While shooting a dog that is chasing your livestock is over the top behavior, we also do have that law here. When I lived in Hudson Mass, our neighbor was constantly putting out dead bodies of dogs he had shot who had been on his property after his cows. We had an entire herd of endangered sheep slaughtered at the Gore Estate in Waltham by pets who had not been confined. The poor sheep were left bleeding; lambs and ewes. While the owners were fined, it did not bring back the sheep or lessen the caretakers heartache at finding the massacre. These dogs bulled their way through a fence. After the death of the sheep, Scott put up electric fencing and now you are no longer able to utilize this beautiful 47 acre estate in the middle of a busy city to walk your dogs. If you want to exercise your dog, fence your yard....bike him...find a Dog Park that is DESIGNATED for dogs off lead. I wish people would realize that while WE love our dogs, that doesnt mean EVERYONE ELSE does. Dawn Restuccia Dawn Restuccia, Pres.
