In speaking with a repro vet a while back, she told me that she is seeing quite a few male GSD's that do not want to breed naturally, can not tie a bitch, and do not have a healthy sperm motility (?) or normal sperm count. (I think I am wording that properly) She seemed to think that our breed is losing reproductive vitality?? Sorry if I got the terms wrong. I sort of understood what she was saying. She said she is even seeing it in German imports, but, mostly show dogs. This does not bode well for our breed. Something must be lost when a breed can't survive without human intervention. Seems to me that the ability to reproduce is vital to the general health of a breed. A sound, healthy dog should be able to breed and whelp naturally. If we move mountains to insure pregnancy using a barely breedable bitch or dog we are only continuing that problem on in future generations. Yes, I have done AI's because they were more convenient, but will not as a general rule. Natural breedings, natural pregnancy, natural whelping and rearing pups in a natural way - one that provides good mental and physical stimulation, creates the soundest animals to carry on the breed. I do not want to be part of turning this into a fragile hothouse flower. I like my strong, intelligent dog who can learn and think and work doing whatever crazy think I want to do with him. ________________________________ From: Sally Hayden <dan-ann@xxxxxxxx> To: ravencd@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx; "showgsd-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx" <showgsd-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sat, November 7, 2009 6:37:49 PM Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Re: How many of you... seems to me the bitch in misery has nothing to do with a c-section sounds more like the misery of the owner not wanting to wait on the the bitch having them Kinda like the Doctor who wants to go play golf -- I have the same problem with people doing AI's all the time never letting the male breed on his own.Oh I know they claim it is to protect from disease but Me thinks it is more a convenience situation. Are we going to dumb down our breed this way too? sally ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2009.
