If the judge had 5 - 10 minutes to evaluate each dog, he or she could
probably make an accurate evaluation of each animal no matter how
well or poorly it was shown. As it is, your dog may only be looked at
for 90 seconds total - if he is pacing during the 10 seconds the judge
sees him gait and standing cow-hocked for the few seconds the judge
glances down the line of stacked dogs, that can be enough to rule
you out even if your dog looks fabulous the rest of the time. A top
handler doesn't let that happen. A really competent owner-handler
might never let that happen either, but if you mess up, you can waste
quite a few entry fees on classes you might have won.

I am NOT trying to be argumentative, but I don't get this part!
Maybe stack to hide a cowhock or less than ideal shoulder, maybe hold the
lead to optimize way of going, but once that dog is stood and shown on a loose
lead, stopped to stand naturally, and gone over by hand individually, doesn't
that all come out in the wash for a knowledgeable judge?
Does for me...
Now, at this time in my life with my health, a good handler is a valuable
asset because they can run better than me.
Until I understand dog showing, the rules, social skills in the ring, etc.
of course the handler is invaluable, as well as if I do not want to show my
own dog,
BUT, the dog's REAL conformation and way of going does not change because
of who is on the end of the lead...
