This topic scares me, because our breed HAS been there.
I fell in love with GSD's when I was 7 and used to see one
with a young man in a uniform in my neighborhood. I don't
remember if he was a policeman or in the military, but he
would let me pet his dog. I thought he was the most
beautiful dog I'd ever seen, but my parents wouldn't even
consider a GSD. When I became a teenager and really
began to coax for a GSD for our next dog, my parents
were always pointing out articles on dog breeds that said
German Shepherds were not stable and not recommended
as pets. A dog book from the library that covered many
breeds went so far as to say German Shepherds were
mentally unbalanced, inherently vicious and known for
turning on their owners and families. My mother never
did get comfortable around my dogs - even though I'd had
GSD's for over 25 years by the time she passed away.
There still are people who feel this way about our wonderful
dogs, and if BSL is passed on one breed, ours is one of
the breeds that won't be far behind.
People who breed and train for dog fighting or agression
often don't license their dogs. It's the family pets that
are legally licensed and well cared for that will be the
first to be seized if the breeds are outlawed, because those
are the dogs that are easy to find.
