Several things you can do... although, they're not always the most convenient methods. "Convenient" to me is just hitting forward, not fiddling with all the header stuff. We talked about being able to put in a bogus FROM address. Well, you can always put in a modified email address. For example, if my address is sirtroth@xxxxxxxxxxxxx, I can instead put for the FROM field sir_troth@xxxxxxxxxxxxx or sirtroth_DO_NOT_REPLY@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx This way, the recipient will know its you, but can't reply by just hitting REPLY. Further, forwarding to a million people won't necessarily get you on their lists. But... this is protects from people hitting the FORWARD and REPLY buttons. Any common sense person can just look at it and figure out the address. This just makes it harder. Of course, every situation tends to need a specific solution. Awhile ago, I had someone who continued to forward me mpeg joke clips. While the majority of the clips were 2MB to 4MB in size, some were almost 10MB. Being that my old Mindspring is only 10MB max, AND I receive a ton of email regularly, I really didn't need to have this "junk" mail sent. Not to mention, that on many occasions I check my mail from work, on a "dial-up". Regardless of how many times I told this idiot (who was a personal friend of mine in real-life) he continued to send them. He would say OK, and then send. The way I stopped it?... I set up a rule on my other mail client that when there was "any" mail from this guy that contained an attachment, it would forward it back to him 5 times, each with the attachment PLUS a message telling him the mail bounced because I do not accept attachments. To me, it was a nice auto setup. To him, it was inconvenient and annoying, and baffled him why it was bouncing. He actually believed it to be coming from the mail server, a true bounce. Result? It finally stopped. ---Troth -----Original Message----- From: pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of sandy1943@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Thursday, March 03, 2005 3:00 AM To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: when sending emails. That's what I am talking about! Is there a way to protect the original sender so our email can't be used later? I like to share with my relatives but some of them are computer challenged and can't figure out how to delete the from information sigh!! They forward something I shared and out my good old addy goes, for tons of junk emails! SandyLea Signature -- To each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. BUT - you guys - you can put whatever you want it to say, and I can still go into the properties in the e-mail and see your address that it actually was sent from. and - the reason that you wouldn't want your address showing is because of the - I was going to say hundreds, but I think it''s more like thousands - of people who forward jokes etc. and never, ever remove ANY of the original senders information. so it goes out all over the internet, and is scooped up by unscroupulous people, and you get more and more spam. plus - viruses from people who have that e-mail that has your e-mail address sitting in it. Right.. well, its just masking it, but the email addy still goes with the mail... whether its in the FROM field or REPLY-TO field. But... most ISP's don't have checks to verify the originating email address. So, you can pretty much put any address in there, and it'll work. Such as... this specific post. Looks like its coming from The Keyboard Cowboy himself... but, hence, it is only Sir Troth. :o) ---Troth -----Original Message----- From: pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of The Keyboard Cowboy Sent: Wednesday, March 02, 2005 10:58 PM To: ~OoO~ Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: when sending emails.
