Thanks Gman ! I am running right now - so I am just waiting with baited breath! I ran something - I can't keep track now if it was what was suggested or if it was something I found on the microsoft site. It did say I was missing a critical file and to put the cd in. I contacted Dell and supposedly they are sending me disks. However - where would I find a serial number for the operating system? My pc book came on the computer as an e-book. I've not noticed any sort of official windows operating system serial number. Thoughts on where to find that? At this point, it would be best to try to run that Recovery Console option Bran mentioned earlier in the thread. Keep in mind that all installations of Windows XP Home, Pro, Media Center 2003 or Media Center 2005 are basically the same. Dell surely added a bunch of stuff to brand the system before shipping it to you, but the Windows functionality is still the same for a non-Dell machine sporting the same WinXP OS type. Having said that, I'll also mention that most system makers include all of the Windows install files on your hard drive so that the CD/DVD isn't needed when you install new hardware. It won't be in the same form as an original install disk, but the machine may still be set up to use them for what you need (Recovery Console access). Look through the documentation that came with the laptop and see if it says anything about accessing the built-in Recovery Console. It would be a key that's pressed during bootup that would lead you to a menu that includes the Recovery Console, among other choices. If that option doesn't exist, only then would I suggest asking around to see if any of your family &/or friends has an official WinXP MC Pro disk you can borrow. As long as you use your own install key (WinXP serial number), you won't be breaking any laws.
