no ram removed - I didn't want to take the chance of turning it off again, and
had it running scandisk before - figured I'd try the ram when I have to turn
it off. now - I have several updates in - several call for re-booting - which
terrifies me!
and one - that appears important - it says urgent by it! it is a .cab file -
directions say to double click the exe after it downloads - there is no exe
anywhere! I opened the cab file - but it is just sitting there - no clue what I
was to do with it!
there is also an update for the bios - but I will do it last because everything
has to be shut down and it says it will re-boot to update that.

Ok is this with or without one stick of ram remove? If this is with one
stick of ram removed that ram is your culprit. If this is with no ram
removed I would backup everything you want and then start applying updates.
