ok, I think I got it in stereo now after going to preferences.  But now I am 
trying to apply "gain" to one channel left or right so that they are equally 
balances when recording.  I did a split stereo track and tried messing with 
the gain buttons but does not seem to change anything.

Any clues anyone?
