Yes, I do (or rather did) highlight the text, before entering the format
menu to change the font. I did say this in my first post, but it was
probably lost among all the words! Before it worked smoothly but now it
doesn't work at all

I don't change fonts that often but it seems I have always needed to type
first then highlight text to change and then enter the format menu to make
the change.
