I had a laser jet for 12 years and it finally when kaput. The
cost of the cartridges and drums were horrendous plus TI quit
making them.

I have a very good HP 720C Deskjet but I don't need color. I
can buy a lexmark printer for the same price as color cartridges
for it at tigerdirect.com.

But who wants to keep buying printers? (LOL)

So I know they can refill black ink cartridges for the HP so why
isn't it feasible to refill (replace) the color in the
3cartridge thingie.

The HP is a 4 cartridge system -- 3 color pak and one black. Or
is my head up my tush. Meaning -- if I only do black ink then
none of the color would be used and only the black.

And, does color ink ever dry out?

You might try a laser printer - they have really come down in
price.
This is only viable if you have the where-with-all.
