Doug's idea of using the inherent flatness of the 8-VSB spectrum, over a short time window, as "training sequence" seems a very good approach. Not only that, it also provides a convenient excuse why 8-VSB might have been better than (single carrier) 64-QAM after all: because the time window for measuring the flatness of the spectrum is cut in half!
