(An Englishman)
pre Norman Conquest?
I had an idea this might get me into trouble. (Again).
Actually, Ward family history suggests an Irish connection, though that was
well before my time.
Interestingly, there is a 'conspiracy theory' concerning the Norman
Conquest. William brought with him a contingent of cavalry from Britanny.
Now, Britanny, so it's said, was founded by Britons who emigrated over the
channel during the time of the first Anglo Saxon invasions, hence the name,
meaning 'Little Britain'. In which case, at least part of William's army
obtained a certain revenge on the Anglo Saxons for their original conquest
some 500 years before.
Of course it didn't stop them trampling on the Welsh, who were, in case
anybody didn't know, the ancestors of those original Britons.
I mention this in the full knowledge that Judy won't forget that I'm in
trouble...
