[LRflex] Photokina and other disasters...

Good Morning, all!

Photokina was very interesting, though I saw little of the fair, itself. I
did, however, manage a 2 1/2 hour meeting with Leica's top brass to discuss the
form of the next "R" Camera, and it proved very interesting. They told us that
they would be quite candid about their plans, but before they went that far
they produced non-disclosure contracts, which we were asked to sign. No sign...
no meeting!

Without giving away any specifics, let me say that the future of the 'R' system
looks bright! The new owners of Leica are a great bunch, determined to turn
Leica into a profitable, innovative camera company. And, unlike Hermes, they
have both the resources and the will to do the job!

For now, I ask that you think (but do not post) about what you'd like to see in
the next 'R' camera. Early next week (when home) I'm going to post a
questionaire on this. I hope that all (including the lurkers) will respond to
this survey, as this will be your chance to have your thoughts & wishes, on
this, conveyed directly to Leica's design team!

More on this, next week, when I'm home. (We're in the UK until Saturday.)

Minor disasters:
----------------

As I think I posted to the list a couple of weeks ago, the Hyperdrive I brought
with me died the very first day I tried to use it. Xavier was superb in
helping me purchase an innexpensive, generic Photo Bank which did the job
slowly, but without a hitch!

Then, in Germany, my R8/DMR died! It decided that a 1/4 second exposure was
appropriate in all circumstances, regardless of light, ISO or control settings!
Well, not quite. If the meter is set to spot metering, the shutter opens and
will not shut until the camera is turned off.

So the camera was left with Leica (we were on the factory tour the next day)
for repair. But, the service department was closed, for the German
Reunification holiday, and so the camera & 80~200 Vario was put in a locked
office, for security. Over the holiday there were heavy rains, the building
leaked, the office flooded and the R8/DMR went from 'broken' to 'probably
destroyed'. Not sure about the lens, at this point.

I left Germany with an R9/DMR & ROM 80~200 loaners, which I must mail back to
Leica tomorrow.

I'll keep you posted on what happens next! (Aren't holidays fun????)
