Hmmm! That's interesting. Makes me want to consider HTML messages.

Do HTML messages read as consistently well as plain text in Outlook with
JAWS these days?

In an open message, the delete key works if you are reading in HTML
format but
if reading in plain text--you have to use control-delete when an in an
open
message--with Jaws 6.0 and above at least and windows XP/SP-2.

Actually the only time that the delete key is to work is when the
message is not open. When there is nothing running but outlook express
and I want to delete an open message I need to use control d. If the
message is not open then the delete key works. I think this might be
because the delete key is a specific windows control key and not an
application specific key stroke. JAWS has nmade it possible to use the
delete key where windows alone does not.
