Mirroring a years old end of life distribution is rather unnecessary
IMO. It encourages use of software with known security vulnerabilities.
note that the original posting said 'for legacy users'. there are legacy
machines that dont need updates and work quite well with end of life
distributions. i have a couple of machines in my lab which run redhat 7.2
and there is no need for me to update them (of course, updating to any
current distro would probably fail due to hardware requirements). they are
on isolated intranets and security is not a major issue. the image
processing software on them works just like it did years ago and will
continue to be used for some more years. why would i update these? in case
something conks out, i will try to restore it to exactly the same distro
and software instead of trying to migrate to new distros. and thats what
legacy support is all about. there are others on campus like this. not to
sound mean, but ftp.iitm.ac.in is primarily meant for iitm users - but
since we have the bandwdith to spare, we dont mind sharing the contents
with others.
