As many are already aware, IIT Madras' ftp.iitm.ac.in is a mirror for
quite a lot of free software. As of now, it is an "official" Debian
i386 repository mirror, and has the following:
* Debian repository
* CentOS repository
* Fedora Core updates
* Cygwin
* Red Hat 9 (required for legacy; some users can't do without it!)
* Linux kernel (This machine is actually http://www.in.kernel.org
http://ftp.in.kernel.org)
* Slackware contents (without ISO, I guess)
* The Linux Documentation Project
and some more things. The site is administered by Dr.Sriram (Dept. of
Aerospace Engg., IIT Madras).
This morning, I had a chat with Dr.Sriram, and he made the following
comments:
* The server is used by people from all over the world.
* Cygwin is, by far, the top downloaded package.
* There is lots of bandwidth available for outgoing traffic, so the
site is, essentially, very fast.
* There is about 200GB of space available, so we can put a lot more
software for download there.
So, immediately suggested that he add the ISO images of Slackware
10.2, FreeBSD 6.1 and the latest Mandriva. I have also suggested that
he get hold of Fedora Core 6 when it is rolled out next month. He
accepted the suggestion, and said that he was open to more suggestions
on mirroring software, though he laid down the following conditions:
* Space, though available, must not be wasted. So, anything that is
left untouched for about a month will be *removed*.
* Preference will be given to packages/software for x86 only. It is
not worth the trouble of mirroring software for some architecture
which may hardly be of use to the general users.
Keeping these in mind, please suggest some packages/distributions
which you think will be worth mirroring, and will be of use.
Also, please mention whether you want the ISO images of the CDs or
DVDs in case of distributions. Personally, I would vote for CDs, as I
do not possess a DVD writer, and because I generally don't get every
CD.
