other than ron's discussion of using SIMD with interleaved buffers, i
don't recall seeing any explanation of a *requirement* for
interleaved. i've seen several people argue in favor of them, but in
general, the technical support for including them seems weak to me.
if we could get some hard data that illustrates the performance
cost/benefit ratio for interleaved buffers, we'd be in a much better
position to understand if there is a requirement or just a preference.
