I agree, the shortcomings of MIDI are irrelevant to the requirements discussion. What is relevant, is that there are developers who want it, and I'm not at all sure that they're a minority.

 is that if you're willing to accept a bit of additional work, it's
 completely possible.

This discussion is pointless, everything /can/ be done in MIDI, you can just package it up in a custom SysEx packet and send that.

The SysEx isn't be understandable without some extra-MIDI knowledge, but
then neither is splitting a 470 note microtonal instrument over 4
channels.
