Well, what I didn't write on that page is
that I used the Q-jet for a doorstop (the Holley I was
using wore out <G>.)
There's only the one wire for the choke. That's it. That's one
reason I love Edelbrocks (and Carters.) The other reason is that
they're "set 'em and forget 'em" carbs. You don't have to tinker
with 'em forever like ya do with with Holleys.
I fixed the links on the page and on the page it linked to.
@John: Yeah, Steve H figgered Q-jets were God's gift to
carburetion. I'm of the opinion that they're the spawn of the devil
himself. I didn't send him the carb...like I wrote, I used it as a
doorstop until I cleaned stuff out when we moved. Then the Elky got
loaded to the gills with stuff that went to the landfill. I sure
regret gettin rid of a lot of that...but then I'm sorta doing the
same thing now. I need room in my tiny garage cuz I wanna shoot the
Monte with primer-sealer before it goes to the salt and there just
isn't enough room to do that without heavin some shit over the side.
Jim and I discussed some plans for next year's "assault on the salt"
and we're gonna run a two-car team. He wants to get his truck into
the 130 club, same as I want to get the Monte, so it'll be
interesting to see how it works out.
We both need new helmets since the rules require SFI 2005 and
newer...same for firesuits. Btw, if you want a convincing argument
for HANS devices, check this thread on landracing:
http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php/topic,8806.0.html This is
what the car looked like afterward:
You can see Mike Cook coming to tell me not to shoot any more
photos...but now that the video's been released...well, please don't
repost it, just in case.
Last funny thing about the salt flats project is that I'm gonna run
a Demon 750 on the Monte. I don't know shit about 'em. I guess I'm
gonna learn a lot. :)

That's a great article Ray! I have a q-jet on a shelf that

Was there only one electrical connection to make to the
edelbrock? I'd love the idea of not having to mess with the
choke. Currently, it is a battle to get the Sprint started in
weather colder than 50 degrees. I usually park it behind my
house in the winter, and only start it on unseasonably warm
days. Although with patience, and a screwdriver holding the
choke open, I have been able to warm up the Sprint on a
10-degree day before.

I will have to agree 100% with Ray on this. I have a Weiand
Steath intake that used to be on the Elky when it had a
carb, and now it's on the Monte. It is basically the same
thing as a performer. Better flow, dual plane for torque,
low enough to stay under a stock hood.
I think I have the 1407on the Monte, and it had a manual
choke. So I bought a choke kit for it and now all is right
with the world.
I had the same problem with the hot wire Ray. I had to pull
it from somewhere else, and I think I even ran one from the
fuse box that was hot with the ignition. Your link on that
page is broken though, that says "Click here for more info
on how I did this. " for the
choke wire info.
I did have to rebuild the Edlebrock that came with the
Monte, but I have had to refurb almost everything the P/O
did. They are easy, and it's been a long time since that
project. The Carter AFB I had on the El Camino before fuel
injection was basically the same thing. They run great,
and you can change metering rods without taking it apart,
right from the top. So don't be afraid of a used one, I
would say.
I remember when you did this! Wasn't Steve H giving you
s#!t because he could make any Q-jet run? Some people can!
Just not me. I thought you ended up sending it to him.
Could be RBD or CRS, or LMNO too.

Go with an Edelbrock

drive with consistent performance and reliability.
Read this page. I've never found anything to change
my mind.

Mary, the limerick is mine....I like
joking about my car as much as I like
working on it. As far as the manifold and
carb go, I still toss around the idea of
getting an aftermarket carb and manifold.
My car is so far away from original, with
cut wires and tubes spliced and emission

I'd be able to hook up a correct Quadrajet
up to it anymore. But if I do, I will
definitely try to have my ducks in a row
before I remove any bolts.

He is the only one I know of (practically)
that has any parts for those. I don't know
that the parts were ever 'in' so I
wouldn't say they are necessarily on the
way out.
Call Rick though, he is a great guy. We
have had many a long conversation. Not
always about cars either.

I missed your e-mail about
ecparts. I like that place and
noticed all the photos of
'73-'77 in his catalog (although
I noticed that the parts for
that generation all seem to be
on their way out). Will see if
I can dig up the catalog
again...I had no idea your elky
was in it!

Sounds like a good name.
It resembles my Monte as
far as the parts and
strategy by the Previous
owner.
The EL Camino by virtue of
the sheer number of parts
from different vehicles,
and the fact that it keeps
dying, but coming back to
life (hence: Elkenstein).
I am glad you found the
parts source. I wish I had
closer yards. 30 minutes
north or south for me to
get to one.

I went to a
great salvage
yard yesterday.
The owner used
to drive a GMC
Sprint. He
immediately
recognized
my Autozone
alternator as
the correct one
for my year of
vehicle. He
also saw my
"before" photo and
said the old
aternator belonged
to a mid to late
80's GM
vehicle. He
sold me some
alternator
brackets that
were identical
to the ones in
your photo.
Unfortunately
they still don't
fit. I think
this all has to
do with the
previous owner
installing a
1980-ish
carburetor on
the car, which
would presumably
required replacing
the intake
manifold, which
would then
require fabbing
new alternator
brackets, and
throw on an
incorrect
alternator to
top it all off.
What do I have
now.........
.......a
Clustertruck!!!
(new name for my
'73 Sprint).
Still was a
good weekend,
though, and I'm
very glad to
find a friendly,
patient,
knowledgeable
salvage yard
owner. That's
as good as gold.
