I also grew up playing games from as early as I can remember...  maybe not that 
early but I was probably 6-7 years old.
 
 
 
The Dear Esther thing is interesting tho.
 
It would absolutely fail as movie, it would be boring as all hell to watch.   
The fact that you had control over the character is the only thing that made it 
possible imo.
 
Not sure if I would like to call it a game... but it would not have worked at 
all without active input from the player.
 
I also however played it knowing absolutely nothing about it.  The experience 
was extremely interesting imo... and its only roughly a hour long anyway.
