Roger, are you referring to the Bulwer-Lytton writing Contest wherein contestants have to write the first sentence of an imaginary bad novel or display all the powers of purple prose that Bulwer-Lytton was capable ofwriting, such rules as never use a simple phrase when a more complicated onestrikes your fancy, preferably going on at great length about what doesn'tneed to be stated. For example, if a night is stormy, it will most likely bedark, due to the preponderance of cumulonimbus clouds in the vicinity, and of course everybody knows the rain will be coming down in buckets, making everybody out in it feel miserable. Why say "home" when you can say"domicile", "residence", or "abode". I remember listening to a program whichprimarily dealt with science fiction and one of the things I remember washearing Harlan Ellison speaking of writerly tendencies which bugged him. Forexample, nobody can hiss when saying: "Get out of here!" It's a physical impossibility to do that. I've encountered books where how a person spokewas described a lot with adverbs. Even though I've encountered such stuff, Icould still enjoy the story. That came from a formerlysighted person who temporarily forgot that he was blind and speaking to a bunch of other blind people. Anyway, I did see that movie before I becameblind and it was one of those movies that was so bad that it was good. There were a lot of other gaffs in it too, but I think most of them had to be seento be appreciated. For example, one of the lead characters was played by Bela Lugosi. Before the movie was finished Bela Lugosi died and anotheractor was substituted. They tried to cover up the substitution by having theother actor cover his face with a cape. There is a group of fans of bad movies who are practically fanatical about that one along with movies like "Godzilla Versus the Smog Monster" and others. Obviously there are also a coterie of bad writing fans too. I forget the name of it, but on this list there was some discussion of a series of books dedicated to awards for bad writing. _ _ _ "Socialism is an attack on poverty." - W. E. B. The bookis Runelords: The Sum of All Men, the first book in the Runelords fantasyseries by David Farland. I am series captain for this eight book, (so far) series. It's actually a good book. Along with the conventional Fantasy elements, the author adds some imaginative ideas of his own and explores them in depth. The book also has greater moral complexity than a lot of Fantasy out there. But in my opinion, the writing could be better. Here is perhaps one of the best examples that might give some of you a chuckle: By evening the clouds blew out of the region altogether, and warmer air now suffused the night, almost as if it were any other afternoon in late summer.
