I think it was Robinson Crusoe. If I am wrong it was a book of about equal fame. A character strips naked to swim across a body of water to an island. When he gets there he picks up something and puts it in his pocket.

There was a book I read a couple of years ago called Baker Towers. It was a
very well-written family saga, but it had one flaw.  It mentioned that as
one of the people in the book was walking along, she saw a boy  with a
transistor radio, and people gathered around him to hear that the war was
over.  The problem was that the transistor hadn't been invented yet and
didn't come into use until the mid-50s.
