Wave lengths? I am reminded of a discussion I had in a bar once. I forget what started it, but somehow the question of philosophical materialism came up and I asked the other guy if he understood what it was. He said that he did and I proceeded to make my point. His reply showed that he did not understand it and thought that a materialist was a person who was desirous of accumulating consumer goods. I then went on to explain what I meant by materialism. Somehow he didn't get it and continued with the assumption that it was a synonym for consumerism. This went on for a while and then someone else spoke up very calmly and said, "You two are on entirely different wave lengths."

The correct definition (in your opinion and experience) being your comment in the following paragraph. However, Carl is on a different wave length than you and he expresses his opinion (based upon his opinion and experience).

I have no problem with Carl's position on God. I just want him to use the
correct definition of his position. But, as he has so clearly indicated to
me, he and I are equally stubborn. It has something to do with our ages, I
suppose.

All:
Why worry. Carl is comfortable with his concept of God and His creation. I
am comfortable with his holding that idea and wish him luck.

Chuck,

It's been a long running discussion. Carl insists that God is a
concept made
up by man, but he also insists that he's an agnostic. Roger and I
have been
telling him, perhaps for more than a year, that he's an atheist.

As a hard-core atheist I would agree with this definition. I just
happened
to catch this message as I am way behind in emails so I haven't been
following much lately. An Agnostic is someone who in simple terms
doesn't
know whether there is a god or any other deities or who doesn't want
to
commit to such a statement. I will have to go back and try to find
Carl's
original post. Arm out of sling as of doctor's appointment today so
I may be
more regular again on the computer.

from Google

Atheism is not a disbelief in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack
of
belief in gods. Older dictionaries define atheism as "a belief that
there is
no God."

Atheism is, in a broad sense, the rejection of belief in the
existence of
deities.[1][2] In a narrower sense, atheism is specifically the
position
that there are no deities.inclusively, atheism is the absence of
belief that
any deities exist.[ It seems to me that this describes your belief.
That is
why I say that you are not an agnostic.
