Good news for Braille readers.I have checked several superscripts with a validator who had a book with a lot of them in it, and they were in the rtf version of the submission. I was able to determine that the Braille translator does indeed handle superscripts at least. No word on subscripts. For footnotes, this is good news because the numbers will appear as they should for sighted readers, and will be translated correctly into Braille as well. So I don't think there is need to worry about the superscripts at least. I have no idea of any books with subscripts, but if anyone has any, let me know. Keep in mind that they have to not only be in the book, but they have to be in the rtf file that was sent to the Admin Queue, so we know for sure that they went to the Braille translator.
Maybe it was true that the old Braille translator did not handle them correctly. I remember hearing that it did not when I first joined. But it appears that they are okay now.

Evan,We will be interested to know what you find out about subscript and super script. We use Window Eyes as a speech program and I don't know if it identifies those attributes. Thus far, both Mike and I have been validating in Open Book; does it recognize the attributes? Ocasionally, I hear a number after a word or sentence and know that it is a super script footnote number; have deleted that number and entered the same number at the end of the sentence. However, we have not identified any words or partial words in sub or super script; I doubt we have missed any in the books we have validated; at least, we sure hope not!Cat Lover Lori----- Original Message ----- From: "Evan Reese" <mentat1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, September 16, 2007 8:54 AM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: superscript and subscriptI am looking into what the Braille translator does with them directly. The one instance I found in a book I submitted came out rather strangely, although it is still recognizable as a superscript. For Braille readers, it says: and-sign sup-number sign 2, followed immediately by the number 20 in Nemeth code. But someone with whom I often work says that she adds superscripts regularly for notes, so it looks as it does in the print book. We're going to try to look at some examples today if possible and see what they look like in the brf versions. I have been simply going on what I have read here, so I want to find out directly. That one example is not enough to go on.I'll report back today or tomorrow on what I have found. I hope I remember it, because it's much easier to do that then fix them one at a rime as I've been doing. smile Thanks, Evan. Cindy P.S. I'll bet that will also work for raised and lowered letters that I've been putting back to normal one incident at a time. --- Evan Reese <mentat1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote:Another thing I just thought of is that she could select the whole text and if any of the text is super- or subscripted, it will say so in the Font dialogue box in Word. Then she can just uncheck either or both of them and desuperscript and desubscript everything. They should be removed because the Braille translator does not handle them well, if at all. I forget what happens exactly, but they will definitely not appear as they should in the Braille version. I can't speak to the Daisy version.
