Dunno. It looks like - in reality - it was. Or maybe this is a "Windows
thing" and their advice didn't realise that for them the problem was a
*Windows* default.

Again, dunno. The new 2i2 does have what they call an 'air' effect designed
I think to boost mid-HF as something said to make voice recording 'nicer'.
Something I *don't* want, so I hope it isn't default. Know when I check the
frequency response. But things like that may need the software control.
But another possibility is that the 2i2 is pretty much 'bottom of the
range' for Focusrite (ignoring the mono 'Solo'). Their more complicated
interfaces have many more ins and outs. And one purpose of their software
seems to be "routing and mixing". i.e. how to select and mix things.
I also noted when looking at their general tech info that the number of
such input channels you choose affects the max sample rate provided.
i.e. if you stick with two channel use you can get 192k. But if you want
more this can drop to 96k or 48k as you use more channels.
That kind of choosing means that some kind of software for users to do this
makes sense from their POV with non-tech users.
Perhaps their support people are so used to this that they've ended up
muddling their explanations in some way. Dunno, just guessing.
I've not tried it with Linux yet, will do sometime soon. Looks like it wil
work with that as well. But I'll do some more playing... erm experimenting
with RO first. :-)
Want to assess the effect of the sample rate and gain settings on dyanamic
range, check frequency response, etc. Then do a decent set of input level
controls to use in place of the awkward ones on the 2i2. They are a PITA to
set or reset accurately. Too small and fiddly with no detents.
Apart from that, barring nasty surprises, I'd recommend the 3rd Gen 2i2 for
RO users.
