Hi everyone
I considered the Samsung netbook as I saw it had the cream of all the other netbooks. However having also a Dell xps1210, the Samsung isn't too much smaller. I looked at the Dell Netbook Inspiron Mini 9 and found it to be more to my liking. Yes it's quite a bit smaller and lighter. Yes, the keys are smaller but after a short time it's easy to touch type again. There are one or two inconveniences like the Function keys needing to be called by shortcuts, but for me it's ultra portable. It has solid state memory and no hard drive, but most programs I wish at present to carry about with me won't take up more than 8GB of memory. Additionally of course memory cards, usb2 flash and external hard drives expand this. Dell are doing an offer for this at £279 (Windows XP edition) and a little more expensively Vodafone have their own version - internally it has the ability to log on to the Vodafone network at 3g or HDSA speeds without having a dongle or external phone. Bluetooth ,Wifi, etc. make this an excellent communication tool. The battery although smaller than the Samsung's seems to give fairly good and long results from a charge - 3 or 4 hours+. By the way Vodafone's offer is £25 a month for 2 years. For the person on the move this can be quite good as you can access the internet outside of all wifi areas. The Samsung is probably the best at the minute, but if anyone's looking for lightness, compactness and good connectivity then perhaps they might wish to look at the Dell or Vodafone offer.

Hi. Yes I am. Your not the only one who has bought one of these. A friend has bought the same model yesterday. The machine is becoming popular on this list.

Are you in UK Saqib. I think I will enjoy the NC10 when travelling and
visiting friends and family.

Hi Eleanor. I have my PC setup in the dining room with 2.1 speakers from
Creative. They sound good with a 30 wot output. The trouble is it's always
cold in there in the evenings despite the central heating. This is when I
use my laptop. Plus it's much more comfortable sitting back on your sofa
with the laptop. The desktop gets used a lot in the summer as it's nice
and cool in the dining room.

You've got a fair point there Saqib because I would only invasage using
mine
out and about. At home I prefer to use my PC, not even necessarily a
laptop
unless two people are using computers.

Hi Carrol. Personally I don't think the fan is loud. These machines are
really meant to be used for short periods of time. A couple of hours is
quite ok but if someone wants to keep a machine running longer then a
traditional laptop would be a better option.

We have an Advent 4211 and I don't consider the fan too loud. We
haven't
used it for long periods at a stretch so I don't know either if it gets
too
hot, but we're pleased enough for what we paid and for the reason we
need
it. Mike is not a heavy user and just likes to keep up with his email
and
music, with occasional quick surfing, and he's happy.

Hi James. Some people did report that the fan was a bit loud on the
Advent
4211. I sometimes use my phone as a modem by USB connection. I get a
decent connection and browsing speed. The Samsung netbook sounds nice
and
I will look into it in the new year.

Hi Saqib, I didn't like the Advent because of the pour build quality
and
keyboard design. Also, the machine tended to get rather hot when
using
it. And by the way, I use a program called Joikuspot on my Nokia N95
which transmits my 3G internet from O2 from my phone as a WiFi
signal.
I
then can connect to the internet anywhere on the netbook without
having
to disable my phone by removing my Sim.

Yes I did, and would have gone for it had it not been for the
keyboard.
I just preferred the Samsung as I found the keyboard on the Advent
very
flat and not quite as tactile. What I mean by that is that some
keyboards are very flat, and the keys don't feel separated.
Otherwise,
I
think the spec on the Advent and Samsung were identical. I think the
Asuss was even smaller, which is fine if you want something really
tiny.
I would just recommend people go out there and have a feel of these
machines before buying. While they are pretty much alike, there are
some
subtle differences on the keyboard and shape of the machine that
might
have a differing appeal. I think the Packard-Bell had a dual core
processor, but I just didn't like it, and am not a fan of that brand
anyway.

Hi Jacky Did you come across the Advent 4213? That one has a simcard
slot
under the battery and you just insert a Three simcard in and use
their
broadband. This feature is useful for when out and about. No need to
look
for a wifi hotspot.

Hi All

Apologies for cross-posting for those subscribed to both lists, but
this topic has been covered on Access UK and BCAB recently.

Having been very interested in the thread of Netbooks, I decided to
have a wander round while on a couple of days leave last week, and
have now purchased the Samsung NC10. I looked at the Advent and
Asuss
machines, as well as a similar spec Packard-Bell and the Samsung. I
chose the latter because I just liked the keyboard that little bit
better. For those who use a Pac Mate qwerty, the keys on the
Samsung
are not unlike it, and I felt comfortable typing on it without
feeling
too cramped up for space.

I've now installed JAWS, K1000 and Microsoft Office Professional
2003,
and find it works a treat with these and other programs I have added and use regularly. In fact, it's a cracker! I particularly love its
portability, and bought a nice little bag that takes its mains
charger
and has room for other items like an external drive or USB pen.

For those interested in wanting to buy one of these machines, the
Samsung NC10 comes with 1GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, WiFi and
Bluetooth,
Windows XP Home, has three USB ports, ethernet connection,
microphone
and headphone sockets, and a battery life purported to be around the
2.5
hour mark.
They come in I believe blue, white and black, the latter being the
choice I went for. They cost around £300.

All the machines I looked at had very similar specifications, with a
slight variation on the estimated battery life. For me - and this
is
very personal to the individual - the Samsung had just that bit
nicer
keyboard.

So far, so brill!!
