George,

It sounds as if it's worth a look. I just want something i can leave to do its "thing" and do it well too! Why buy a computer programme and have to make all the decisions for all of them? Now, of course, some I wouldn't have any other way! <Smile>

Thanks for the info anyway. If anyone has anything to add, having tried it or currently using it, I'd be interested.

Carol

Hi Carol,

If you mean the Microsoft Anti-Spyware program, there is now
a Beta 2 called "Defender", and from various reports on
various lists, it appears they have listened to us all in
terms of accessibility.

George.

George,

I think I recall that this was not very user friendly to
VI's.
Can you confirm or deny this, please?

Thanks.

Carol

Hi Andy,

Huh! Trannies are still a mystery to me. I nearly bought
a post card
radio at Bletchley Park this afternoon.

O.K. Firewalls. Hardware are generally the best, and only
need
attention in exceptional circumstances.

Anti-Virus software. A good one, set to automatically
update, needs
little attention thereafter.

Anti-Spyware. Personally I use Microsoft's Defender which,
although
technically Beta, is proving well worth it, and is still
the only one
of it's type which works AT THE TIME.
All the rest need you to do periodic scans. Again, set up
to
automatically update, and it pretty much takes care of
itself.

George.

Hi George.

I have two large Tamworth pigs who have turned my garden
into a swamp,
with all this rain we are having, though the mud they
create is clearer
than your explanation, grin.

But seriously, so I need a Firewall which only allows
invited guests,
An Anti-Virus to supervise them and a Spyware package to
stop them
from steeling information.
That's three separate types of protection. Can you not get
all of
these in one package? Norton has Internet Security and
Anti-Virus, but
does it also have a spy checker? It's all rather
complicated George,
and makes me feel like not having a party in the first
place. However,
I do enjoy having the computer and talking to people like
yourself. My
Father-in-Law does not have any of these problems with his
transistor
radio in his garden shed!

Best wishes.
Andy

Hi Andy,

Let my put it this way:

A firewall on a PC is like a set of keys to your house.
You
might have a front door key, a back door key, shed key,
garage key.

A virus is like an unwelcome guest who walks in though an
unlocked
door without your knowledge, has a meal and
leaves
the place looking like a council tip, and walks back out
again. You
end up having to redecorate.

Now you can still let unwelcome guests into your house,
but
if you are having a party, one or more might cause
damage, so the
virus checker tries to stop anyone doing any
damage.

However, there might still be guests around who sneak a
look
in your drawers where you have your passport, household
bills and
such like, and while they don't actually steal your
physical
possessions, they make of note of all your personal
details, and use
them in shops and such like, pretending to be you.
That's where
"Spy" protection comes in, better known as "Spyware
Protection".

Is the muddy water clearing any?

George.

Hi George.

Please forgive my ignoranceGeorge, but is a firewall not
the same
thing as Anti-Virus? I've uninstalled Sygate because I
thought that
the router was doing the same job
as
Sygate was.

Best wishes.
Andy

Hi Andy,

I very much doubt the Router will have any anti-virus
software.
What it most likely will have is a hardware firewall.

George.

Hi Andrew.

So that's Norton on my computer and AVG on my wife's
computer. She
has the wireless card and my computer is plugged into
the Router.
The Router has it's own
anti-virus
I believe.

Best wishes.

Andy

Hi Andy,

I would remove AVG on the system if you have Norton
enabled already.

Hi Carol.

One thing for sure Carol, any future computer thatI
may
purchase will
not
have Norton near it. You are right, it's just not
worth
the bother
trying
to get rid of it. At the moment, I have it enabled on
my
computer along
with AVG and Pauline's computer has AVG. The Router
has
some kind of
anti-virus, and for the moment - fingers crossed, it
seems
to be working
fine. I know now how to disable Norton from starting
on
boot-up, so if
I
get any problems with it, I'll simply turn it off.
However, if I do
that,
I'll need to have some other form of internet
security.
Quite a lot of
mail is now suggesting that when purchasing a
computer,
it's best to
avoid
those like mine, which is a pc world package, and to
purchase a blank
computer with nothing on it, and to buy a cd version
of
xp home or pro.
I
think that that is exactly what I'll do when I get my
new
computer later
this year. Andrew and George have both provided
details
of computer
providers who will build a computer for you from
scratch
and I am
currently
checking these out. It was so easyin the old days
after
reformatting,
to
insert Windows 95 then all your drivers for printer,
scanner etc. At
least
then, you knew what was on your computer.

Best wishes.

Andy

Sorry, Andy, I think it should be "Goodbye Norton".
It
worked
for me for a few years then, once it went wrong, it
just
seemed
to stay that way. I eventually, rather reluctantly,
gave up the
fight! After all, it's too much of a pain to
remove!

Just my thoughts!

Subject: [access-uk] Internet Security and Routers

Hi all.

At Christmas, I bought my wife a wireless router to
enable her to
go on the
internet with her computer, which is located
upstairs.
She got a
wireless
card installed. The router is downstairs and my
computer is
attached at
that point. Since getting this router I have had
nothing but
problems and
had to re-format several times. I've also had
problems
getting
rid of
Norton, which came with my computer. I
re-formatted
on
Sunday
and this
time, rather than try to get rid of Norton and use
Sygate and
AVG, I decided
to just let Norton do it's stuff. Unfortunately,
when
I did a
live update,
my computer seemed to crash or stall. I decided to
attempt to
turn Norton
off and managed this, in terms of Internet Security
and
Anti
Virus. I then
installed Sygate and AVG and my old problems
started
again. So,
eventually,
to my question. Is having a router perhaps
causing
my
problems.
I mean,
is there any implications when using Sygate, AVG or
Norton, when
you are
attached via a Router.

I've really had it with this computer and fancy
just
visiting PC
World to
get into dept again, but if the problems I am
having
are
associated to my
Router, then a new computer would not resolve
anything.
Any
advise or ideas
would be very welcomed.

Best wishes.

Andy
