It does sound like you must be missing an audio codec, or WMP isn't reading the codec. As someone suggested yesterday, uninstall the WMP you have and re-install it... Another thought-do you have WinAmp on your machine as well? If so, will that play .wav files? If it will, then I'm sure an uninstall /re-install of WMP will work.
