So, it had nothing to do with consumers available to pay the price delta,
and consumers weren't really interested in the safety issues and were
responding to the pretty pictures on TV?  "Fuel economy" is a pure canard in
this context, since there is no fuel economy with SUVs.  You can measure the
MPG, but nobody calls it economical.

I think I read that the SUV craze was being driven by the auto industry
which likes making vehicles less subject to safety and fuel economy
regulations than regular cars.
