If you Google "kettle of fish" you get
http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-ket1.htm

The Webster English Dict. quotes W.S.Gilbert, "There's a pretty how do you
do. There's a pretty kettle of fish".

Brewer's Dict. of Phrase and Fable confirms the idea of a salmon catch which
is boiled and eaten under uncomfortable conditions. They quote Scott's
St.Roman's Well, ch. XII.

Etymology libre!
