Phil: Doesn't it seem self-defeating to lower one's standards
in order to convince others that it is better to get along than to fight?

Eric: Not that I can yet understand. Is the aim to stop the fighting or to convince others to get along?

If X and Y are fighting, and X is following a higher standard of fighting while Y is following a lower standard of fighting, how does X's higher standard convince others to get along?

Your help here please. What am I missing about your point?
