Didn't realize this guy was so right-wing. His
_Life at the Bottom_, which is praised by moderate
rightwingers like George Will, seems to reach the
same conclusion as Oscar Lewis, on a "culture" of
poverty. The difference is that he blames the
culture of poverty on the intelligentsia.
As for the abuse of women issue in Islam, what do
people think about the practice of arranged
marriages? Is that a fundamental abuse of the
rights of women? Or is it a tic of certain
cultures (not just Islamic but also Hindu for
example) that must be overlooked in the process of
assimilation?
