Yep, I thought the same. Then I thought "What the hell" and installed
Stage 1. It really just takes longer to install, it isn't much more
complicated.

You can install it from your current system. Just don't mess up the
partitions, don't forget to chroot, follow the instructions, don't screw
up the lilo.conf (and check it thoroughly) and you'll be fine.
