This is a very good point. Login should not be a concern as long as you
check the "remember login" box.

And as Mike alluded to, the larger the user base the more
productive/useful the forum will be. In addition it is very beneficial
that Cadence technical people will be watching the forum and of course
chiming in as necessary.

In addition to the normal forum posts that you are accustomed to seeing
on Freelists, the moderators will also be initiating specific technical
discussions. It is hoped these directed technical discussions will
provide Cadence with a better understanding of how customers are
currently using the tools as well as exposing tool needs/wants for the
future.

As far as content filtering is concerned, I really don't think that will
be an issue. In general the users of the Freelists forum have conducted
their communications in a professional manner and I don't think that
will change. I totally agree that an occasional bit of good natured
humor can do everyone some good.

Yes there are some startup issues to be dealt with, but in the long run
I believe this will be a superior forum for everyone.

Best Regards,

Randy

An addendum to Mike's note:

On the login screen there is a check box "remember login" If you check
that box you never have to login again - even after closing down your
computer. The next time your browser opens to www.cdnusers.org, thru
the link in the email post you received from the forum to which you
subscribe, you will be directly at the post you want to answer. Just
click on reply and write.

Importance: High

Everyone,

Sorry for my delayed response.. I was on a conference call with the
Steering Committee and could not break away.

I will try to respond to some of the concerns and issues..

You can setup the forums on CDNUSERS.ORG so you get an immediate email
when something is posted. The only limitation at this point is have the
ability to post and respond to the forum via email
but you can follow the discussions via email. We know this is a major
limitation and have been reviewing an add-on module which will give us
the post and reply capabilities via email..

I have been signed up to the cdnusers.org forums since they want live
and yes it is a pain to login in the site to post/reply to the forums
but I would not totally say it is unusable. I know we have sort of a
web based environment on Freelists.org for the forum but I believe that
CDNUSERS.ORG forums has more functionality and usability features that
Freelists.org does not have. I am sure some users on this forum will
agree once they look over the CDNUSERS.ORG forums.

Most of the Cadence folks that have supported the ICU PCB Forum over the
years have already signed up and active on the CDNUSERS.ORG forums.. We
even picked up a couple more talented folks from the Cadence side of the
fence as well to assist in the moderating.

Going to Austin's response.. The goal is to have one location for
users to communicate with each other instead of having multiple
locations and that is what makes CDNUSERS.ORG a good place to start.

We have a request in the web team to look into the hard to read text on
the web page and see what we can do... Personally, I do not have an
issues with the web site and I have very bad vision as well but the web
team is going to look into this.

I have a questions.. If we were able to get the CDNUSERS.ORG forum such
that you had the ability to monitor / post / reply directly to the forum
via email would that address most of everyone issues/concerns ?

NOTE: We are not going to shutdown the forum immediately so please
don't abandon us yet.. Lets discuss this further.

Mike

MessageI agree as well. I prefer the email list format. Web based
discussion forums are far more cumbersome IMO.

There is no reason to not continue an Allegro PCB email list on either
freelists.org or at yahoo. The important thing is to have only one
though...

Austin

I agree. I really appreciated receiving the emails from the
icu-pcb-forum and was happy to contribute my 2 cents. I was always able
to get some direction on issues that were pertinent to my design
problems and greatly appreciated the help I received from others. I
surely hope that this will continue, but I can't see my self logging in
to view what the latest question or hot topic is for the day. Please
keep this email forum going!!!
I can't stress it strongly enough how much I enjoy the simplicity,
usefulness, and the occasional chuckle at the daily discussions. I have
registered and logged into the CDNUSERS.ORG website and find it very
cumbersome. I realize that some do rag a bit much on and about Cadence,
but it is just the nature of the beast when schedules are looming and
formal help from Cadence is sometimes slow.

And so the other shoe drops, and Cadence kills of another user group.
I am surprised it took so long, it took them less than a year to kill
off the Specctra group after they bought it. Now all those "hidden"
Cadence employees (hidden except when they went on vacation) won't have
to endure us "rabble-rousers" any more.

Mike, the advantages are to Cadence, not to the users. It is a lot
more of a hassle to have to log into a web site than it is to answer
emails, but it is much easier to control content. On top of that,
Cadence has absolutely NO interest in making the site more accusable to
visually impaired users such as myself. When told that the next was
hard to read, the web team's reply was that since my employer's site
used small text, too, I had no reason to complain. Real helpful... I
have enough difficulty reading the site, I doubt I will be visiting that
often.

It's been a fun ride. See y'all in the funny papers <:^)

Subject: [PCB_FORUM] Announcing the Transition of the ICU PCB Forum
to CDNUSERS.ORG
    Importance: High

    ICU PCB Forum Participants,

Last month, the Cadence Designer Network rolled out an enhanced new
User Community site at"www.cdnusers.org". Our goal for this site is
to
promote a greater exchange of technical information and ideas among
customers, and between customers and Cadence throughout the year
    between the annual CDNLive! Conferences.

This community site has established user forums for the SPB
Co-Design
space that the PCB Forum on Freelist.org currently serves.
Cadence technical/support AEs have been encouraged to register as
members of this new community to monitor the forum postings and
contribute to the discussion as we have seen on the PCB Forum.

The ICU PCB SIG board members, who currently maintain the Freelists
PCB Forum, have accepted moderator positions on the new cdnusers
community site. Detailed discussions were held regarding whether
or not to move the Freelists forum to the cdnusers PCB Forum.
The consensus from those discussions was that we should shutdown
the ICU PCB Forum on Freelists.org and transition over to the forums
on cdnusers.org. The cdnusers community site is open to the public
so please feel free to browse around to see what it is all about.

Note that at the forum or the thread level you are able to subscribe
and get email notifications of all posts directly to your desktop
(must be registered and logged in to access this feature).

There are many advantages in moving over to this new user community,
above and beyond the forums. The cdnusers site is organized into
four
major technology zones, with user-contributed articles and
interviews
user contributed product reviews, screenshots and videos, as well as
user-to-user forums. The content on these zones will be refreshed
on
a weekly to bi-weekly basis, and the forums and user comments are
posted immediately with moderator oversight. The forum and
community
moderators will poll the user community from time to time on current
design challenges, tool enhancements, tool refinements and tool
use common practices. This feedback will be used to drive content
at the annual CDNLive! Conference and provide input to the Cadence
    planning/development process.

We are also developing a process to capture key issues to feed back
to
Cadence on a regular basis which will be done via the
www.cdnusers.org
    web site.

We have a lot of talented users that have taken part in this forum
and
we do not want to lose this knowledge base. We encourage everyone
to register for this new community site and connect with other
Cadence
users worldwide. Once registered you will be able to reply and post
to
the user forums and access any of the downloads including the
CDNLive!
    2005 Silicon Valley Proceedings.

Please visit http://www.cdnusers.org and click Register to get
    started.
Note: We will process the registrations as quickly as possible but
there may be slight delay in receiving the confirmation email which
grants login access to the site.

Thank you all for supporting the ICU PCB Forum. We look forward to
see
everyone's participation on the new Cadence user community site,
    www.cdnusers.org
