I don't know, Ann. I mean, I don't think it's gonna say #1&frac#12 if it's in Nemeth code, is it?

Hi all,

Sounds like those numbers are in computer braille or Nemeth, just like they're supposed to be. I'd have to see the braille to know. It's dificult when you hear it.

The following example from Rival Crock-Pot Recipes is really what I'm
concerned about; I have a feeling this must be a braille translation

#1&frac#12(dots 5-6 I think)pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts
&frac#12(dots 5-6?)cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
&frac#12(dots 5-6teaspoon salt.
Do you suppose this is 1-1/2 pounds chicken, one half cup plus 2
tablespoons flour and 1/2 teaspoon salt? I put in the number sign to
reproduce it in braille. I put the braille dots in parentheses; they
might be 2-3, I'm really not sure. Since this isn't the only Bookshare
recipe book I have seen like this, I am concerned about what could or
should have been done; it isn't just scanning errors that concern me and
hopefully this isn't even happening anymore. If others are concerned
about this problem, please download this book to see what I'm talking
about. Jill I'll be sure to look at your book, Mike.

When I did the Kingsford outdoor cooking books, there was a note that
all of
the fractions had been checkedd for accuracy. When reading the book I had no difficulty in reading those fractions, such as 1/2 cup, etc. It would
take a sighted person to look at the book and the computer screen to be
sure
that everything matched. You might want to look for Kingsford in the
index,
just to see how it came out.

I have never been involved in a recipe book but I am aware that most of
them on Bookshare are a mess; however, a few seem to have solved the
problems of dealing with fractions. I am a braille reader where I think
this is especially important. Could someone give directions as to how
these
fractions must be changed to accommodate the braille reader. Jill

Hi Gergina,
It will help if you include in comments a note that says all
fractions in
the recipes have been checked.

Hi Gail-- Before submitting the book I will have Tarran look at
the recipes to
make
sure that they are correct, and I'll put a hold on the book for you.

Hi Gail,

You need to be able to see to proofread these books. There are
recipes whose fractions need to be varified against the print copy of
the
book.

Sorry to disappoint.

Mayrie
