[bksvol-discuss] Re: O T Obtaining cartridges from APH to be used in NLS player.

Susan sent me a post from a list she is on concerning NLS cartridges and
flash drives. I'll paste the content here.

Those of us who have been on this list for any length of time know that
different media types might work with the NLS digital talking book machines.
Those types and their level of success follow:

NLS cartridges. These 1GB and 2GB cartridges were designed to work in the
player and barring some technical problem with the particular cartridge
should work reliably. I have seen no posts of problems with these cartridges
in the players. However, they are the most expensive per gigabyte of storage
space.
USB thumb drives. Some of these work just fine with the DTBM and others do
not. No definitive technical explanation has yet been given detailing what
is required for these to work consistently or detailing what will cause them
not to work. Thumb drives containing U3 software should be avoided as these
have been reported to consistently cause problems with the DTBM.
USB SD card readers. These are consistently said not to work with the DTBM
although some have successfully used them. If the user already has one and
wishes to try it with the DTBM, no harm should result in doing so and it may
just work. I would not purchase an SD card reader and SD card just for the
DTBM, however.

For those commenting on media, please refrain from making absolute comments
such as "SD card readers do not work with the DTBM." While this is generally
the case, several have reported success with these devices and such comments
result in the spreading of misinformation. All of this technology is still
relatively new and due to the variety of tweaks that manufacturers use to
gain a competitive advantage, the only real way to know if something works
is to plug it into your player and try it. About all we can do is to
remember the particular brand and model number and report to the list
whether it worked or not. Thanks.

Hi Jim!

I agree with you. I'm going to try a few flash drives I have here and see
what happens. *smile*

I tried to use a perfectly good 8 gb memory stick with my NLS player, and it
didn't work. NLS is unable to give me a satisfactory reason why it doesn't
work. In my not so humble opinion, NLS just needs to fix their code! You
shouldn't need a special cartridge to use with that player.
